Five Ways People Ruin a Floating Floor

A floating floor is the most forgiving flooring system sold and one of the easiest to wreck. It is fastened to nothing. It behaves as a single sheet that expands, contracts and slides a few millimetres with the seasons, and almost every floating-floor failure we get asked about comes from treating it like a floor that has been nailed down.
The catalogue records 3,884 products as floating and a further 2,498 as click-lock — the two overlap, since a click joint is one way to build a floating floor. Between them they cover most of the laminate and rigid-core vinyl a Canadian homeowner is likely to buy. Here are the five mistakes that account for most of the damage, and what actually fixes each.
Mistake 1 — Pinning the floor down
The floor must be free to move at every edge. It usually is not, because of one of these:
- No expansion gap, or a gap at the walls but not at pipes, posts, door jambs and the stone hearth.
- A kitchen island or full-height cabinet sitting on top of the floor. Its weight is a fixed point. The floor still moves; the joint that gives way is simply somewhere else.
- Transition strips screwed through the plank into the subfloor instead of into a track that lets the plank slide.
- Caulk or grout pushed into the expansion gap to tidy it up, which converts the gap into a wall.
The symptom is seasonal: joints peak or tent in a humid August, then open into visible gaps by February. Cabinets and islands should be installed first with the floor cut around them, not on top of them.
Mistake 2 — Buying thin and expecting quiet
Of the 37,972 products in our catalogue that record a thickness, the single largest band is 3–4 mm, holding 13,301 of them — comfortably the biggest band in the range. Thin cores are not a niche; they are the mainstream of what gets sold.
Thin is not the same as bad. A 4 mm rigid core over a properly flat slab will outperform a thicker plank over a bad one. But be honest with yourself about what thin gives up: it telegraphs every imperfection underneath, and it sounds hollow if the underlay is wrong. Footfall sound is governed far more by the underlay and the substrate than by an extra millimetre of core.
If you live in a condo, the acoustic requirement is not a matter of taste. Most boards specify a minimum rating in their rules, and some require an installer’s declaration. Get that number from your property manager before you order underlay, not after.
Mistake 3 — Never measuring the subfloor
A nailed or glued floor follows the subfloor. A floating floor bridges it. Where there is a dip, the planks span across the void and the joint takes the load every time someone walks over it — which is why the failure appears in a neat line rather than at random.
- Run a long straightedge across the room in several directions and mark the highs and lows with chalk.
- Grind or sand high spots; fill low spots with a levelling compound compatible with your flooring and underlay.
- Vacuum properly. Grit trapped under an underlay is a permanent crunch.
Levelling is the least glamorous line on a flooring quote and the one most likely to save the floor. It is also the line people delete first when the total looks high.
Mistake 4 — Ignoring the run limits
Manufacturers publish a maximum run — a length, an area, or both — beyond which a floating floor needs an expansion joint or a transition. The figure varies by product, which is exactly why people assume it does not exist.
- Long hallways running into open living space are the classic overrun.
- L-shaped and U-shaped layouts need a transition at the inside corner far more often than owners expect.
- Doorways: unless the guide explicitly allows a continuous run, break the floor at the door and use a T-moulding.
It is one line in the installation guide. It is also one of the first things checked when a warranty claim comes in for the very failure it prevents.
Mistake 5 — Ordering exactly enough
Divide your square footage by the coverage per carton, then add a waste factor — 7–10% for straight layouts, 12–15% for herringbone, chevron or anything laid on an angle — and round up. Then order one more box and never open it.
The reason is not clumsiness, it is batch variation. Flooring is produced in runs, and a carton bought eight months later may not match the shade of the one it replaces. A sealed spare box is the cheapest insurance in the entire project.
Width matters here more than people think. Across the 67,637 products in our catalogue that record a width, the median is 7.8 inches. Anything wider than that is above the middle of the market, and wide boards are less forgiving: more surface per joint to telegraph a hump, more visible cupping if humidity swings, and more waste on rip cuts along a wall that turns out not to be square.

The five-minute pre-install check
- Cartons acclimatised in the room for the period the guide specifies.
- Straightedge run across the floor in both directions, high and low spots marked.
- Indoor humidity settled between 35–55% and staying there.
- Expansion gap planned at every wall, pipe, post and jamb — and at the hearth.
- Transitions planned at doorways and at any run near the manufacturer’s limit.
- Planks pulled from three or more boxes at once so the pattern does not repeat.
- One full box sealed and stored somewhere dry.
None of this is difficult and none of it is expensive. It is simply the part of the job that happens before the satisfying part, which is why it is the part that gets skipped.
