Flooring that survives a Canadian winter entrance

The two square metres inside your front door take more punishment between November and April than the rest of the house takes all year. It is not one thing doing the damage either — it is three, arriving in order: grit, brine, then meltwater, forty times a week, off the same three steps of pavement.
What follows leans on our own catalogue — 118,651 products from 419 brands, specs normalised so they can be counted — for the parts that can be counted, and says plainly where it is judgement instead.
What actually wrecks an entrance floor
- Grit. Sand, road grit and salt crystals are abrasive. Underfoot they work like a sanding belt, and abrasion — not water — is what dulls a finish first. The scuffed halo inside a front door is thousands of small scratches, not a stain.
- Brine. Rock salt does the roads until it gets too cold, and then municipalities switch to calcium or magnesium chloride. All of it comes inside on boots, dries to a white alkaline film, and is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture back out of the air, so the puddle you thought had dried has not.
- Meltwater and thermal cycling. A boot at −15 °C lands on a floor at 21 °C carrying snow that becomes water in seconds and finds the nearest seam. Do that all winter and it is the seams, not the surface, that fail.
The cheapest fix is not a floor
Before you compare a single product: most entrance floors are killed by things that never had to reach the floor at all. A scraper mat outside the door, an absorbent mat inside it, and a boot tray with a raised lip will remove more grit and brine than any upgrade in material.
The commercial rule of thumb is a mat run long enough that each foot lands on it at least twice — roughly 2 m (6 ft) of matting between the door and the rest of the house. Almost nobody does this in a home, which is exactly why entrance floors wear out first.
Two hundred dollars of matting protects a $3,000 floor better than $4,000 spent on the floor. That is not a sales pitch we enjoy making, but it is true.
How the floor is fixed down matters more than what it is made of
An entrance is the worst place in a house for a floating floor. Water finds the seams, the perimeter expansion gap gets blocked by a door casing or a threshold strip, and the field has nowhere to move except into itself.
Across our catalogue, glue-down is the single most-specified installation method, at 5,869 products; floating is listed by 3,884 and click-lock by 2,498 — the same idea under two names — while thin-set mortar, which effectively means tile, is listed by far fewer, at 564.
- Glue-down is bonded to the subfloor with no cavity beneath it, so meltwater at a seam has nowhere to travel. It is our default for a boot zone.
- Thin-set tile is water-indifferent: rarely listed, and the strongest performer in this one room.
- Floating and click-lock are fine if you keep a proper expansion gap at every fixed object and treat the threshold as a detail rather than an afterthought — sealant under the transition strip, not just around it.

Plank width, seams and where the meltwater goes
67,637 of our products list a width, and the median is 7.8 inches. Do that arithmetic on your own doorway: a 4 ft (1.2 m) landing laid in median-width planks is only a handful of boards across, which puts every one of those seams exactly where boots drip.
Wider boards mean fewer seams, and that is a genuine advantage in an entry. It is also true that wider boards cup more visibly if they do get wet. Where the boot zone is small, tile or sheet vinyl ends the argument outright: there are no seams to defend.
Thickness at the threshold
Of the 37,972 products in our catalogue that list a thickness, the biggest band is 3–4 mm, at 13,301 products — most of what is sold is thin. In an entrance that is mostly an advantage: exterior doors were hung to a fixed height, and a thick floor plus underlay can mean cutting the bottom off a steel door you would rather not touch. The price of thin is that it reads cold over concrete and follows any dip in the subfloor.
Living with it from November to April
- Vacuum before you mop. Pushing grit around with a wet mop is the most common way people scratch their own floor.
- Rinse the salt film off with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Vinegar is the internet’s favourite answer, and it etches stone and attacks grout — keep it away from tile.
- Never let meltwater stand at the threshold overnight. That is where every failure starts.
- Use a boot tray with a raised lip, not a flat mat, for the boots that actually come off.
- Keep indoor humidity between 35–55%. Winter heating dries a house out, and wood-based floors shrink and gap when it does.
Where we would spend the money
In order: matting first, then a hard, bonded or mortared surface in the boot zone, then whatever you actually like for the rest of the hall. A transition strip two metres inside the door is not a design compromise — it is the line between the floor that gets abused and the floor that does not, and it is the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
