Real linoleum is made from linseed oil, pine rosin, wood flour and limestone on a natural jute backing — renewable raw materials rather than PVC. Because the colour goes right through the sheet, wear shows as patina rather than a worn-out print. Forbo finishes its Marmoleum lines with Topshield2, a factory-applied surface treatment: no initial polishing, and routine care is dry sweeping plus damp mopping. Linoleum earns its keep in schools, healthcare and offices, where it takes years of traffic. It is not a wet-area floor, though: the backing is natural jute, so clean it damp rather than wet, deal with standing spills promptly, and avoid rooms where water can pool or rise through the slab.
