Linoleum is a natural material, not a plastic one: linseed oil and pine rosin bound with wood flour and limestone, calendered onto a jute backing. The colour runs through the full thickness, so scuffs and traffic wear in as patina instead of wearing through a printed layer. Linoleum earns its keep in schools, healthcare and offices, where it takes years of traffic. It is not a wet-area floor, though: the backing is natural jute, so clean it damp rather than wet, deal with standing spills promptly, and avoid rooms where water can pool or rise through the slab.
