Real linoleum is made from linseed oil, pine rosin, wood flour and limestone on a natural jute backing — renewable raw materials rather than PVC. Because the colour goes right through the sheet, wear shows as patina rather than a worn-out print. It is a hard-wearing commercial floor — schools, hospitals and offices are its home ground — but it is not a wet-area product. The jute backing is a natural fibre, so damp-mop rather than flood it, wipe up standing spills, and keep it out of rooms where water can pool or wick up through the subfloor.
